CAN YOU BUILD A PIRATE SHIP? – SACRO PAYBACK IN COMMUNITIES

GORDON RAE

Service Manager, SACRO Community Payback Service

Sacro works in partnership with Criminal Justice Social Work Services in Glasgow City Council to deliver the Unpaid Work (UPW) element of Community Payback Orders (CPO). Unpaid work provides individuals with an important, long established, community-based alternative to imprisonment where they perform useful work for the benefit of the community.

Over the last 12 months Sacro Community Payback Service has continued to work toward pre-covid working practices. In November 2022 Sacro re-introduced its domestic painting and decorating service to vulnerable people across the city. This service has been very much in demand; resulting in a long waiting list and generating extremely positive outcomes. This service offers Community Payback Order placements the opportunity to learn and enhance new skills, beneficial for themselves and for future employment.

Service Users are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of any project we undertake, utilising team working, problem solving, confidence in performing tasks, communication, and the ability to follow instructions. Placements demonstrated this with some fitting examples when asked by local schools and nurseries to help design items for their outdoor space.

The ‘biggest’ request this year was from Shawmhor Early Years Centre who asked, “Can you build us a pirate ship?”.  The staff and children were thrilled with the results acknowledging the efforts of the Unpaid Work team to construct the ship from scratch using recycled wooden pallets.

The UPW Team designed and built a playhouse for Govan Gaelic Primary School and named it ‘House of Flowers’.

The Unpaid Work team also supported the Sacro Garden Project at Carmyle Train Station with the ‘Adopt a Station’ Project run by Scotrail.  The team sanded and painted whisky barrels, then delivered and filled then ready for the Garden Project.

The Community Payback Service has received numerous feedback and praises from members of the community, Social Work and Service Users alike.

The painting & decorating service has provided invaluable help to vulnerable people to live comfortably and happily within their homes.

The woodwork projects have also provided hours of enjoyment to children within primary schools across Glasgow.
